Number plates cameras are on the increase. More and more police authorities are employing automatic number plate recognition cameras in their fight on crime. Initially they were trialled to catch uninsured drivers around London but such was the success that it has spread throughout the country. Police have found that they are also catching travelling criminals as a bonus which is reducing other crimes as well.

Foreign vehicles avoid number plate recognition policing. More and more offences are being detected and prosecutions secured using cctv linked to automatic number plate recognition software, however foreign vehicles are effectively exempt from these systems as their registration numbers are not on the DVLA database. Legislation has been changed to enable pan-european offences to attract licence penalty points but this isn’t going to happen via cctv.
